Hijas del Sol y el Mar is a multidisciplinary project weaving together mask-making, photography, and music video to honor Afro-Taino ancestry and diasporic identity. Created in collaboration with my Boricua community, this work centers bomba music and the emblematic symbol of El Sol de Jayuya, integrated into the masks as a tribute to resistance and resilience. Rooted in collective memory and ancestral pride, the project is an act of defiance against ongoing colonization and cultural erasure. Hijas del Sol y el Mar becomes a visual and sonic offering—a reclamation of identity, spirit, and connection to land and sea across generations. Images by Wil Suárez
