Melancolía is a series of paintings inspired by foods that are essential to cultural identity and nourishment—pan con aguacate (avocado toast), mangos, and tostones (fried plantains). These are foods that should be accessible to all, yet are often made inaccessible due to systemic issues like gentrification, food deserts, and the commodification of traditional ingredients. The series reflects on the emotional and spiritual impact of being disconnected from the foods of our ancestors, asking: What does it mean to crave what once grew freely around us? Melancolía is a meditation on loss, memory, and the fight for food justice in diasporic and urban communities.
